Weissenstein Milestones

Tel Aviv, a journey in the footsteps of Ha’zalmaniya photography studio

Photographer Ilan Cohen set out on a journey in the footsteps of the work of Rudi Weissenstein from Hazalmaniya, who documented Tel Aviv from the 1930s until his death in 1992. He traced Weissenstein’s footsteps over a year, searching for the places, studying the angles, examining the time of day when the photographs were taken, and standing where Weissenstein had stood 70 years earlier. On this journey Carmi knocked on doors of strangers, stood on balconies, climbed roofs, and once even found himself locked inside a building site after the workers had gone home for the day.

The journey produced over 40 images that reconstruct photographs of Tel Aviv from the 1930s until the 1960s. It is interesting to see the physical, environmental, social, and cultural changes we have lived through, and at times also the absence of change.
