Abraham (Izzy) Orloff

Orloff was born in 1891 in the Ukraine and immigrated to Palestine with his family in 1903. In 1910 he immigrated to Australia, and with the outbreak of World War I in 1914, he enlisted in the intelligence corps of the British army. He reached Palestine with the forces of General Allenby, and in the course of his military service documented local scenes with his camera. His brother, Zvi Nishri, a sports teacher in the Herzliya Hebrew Gymnasium, took him on trips with his students, and photographs of these trips were recently found in the school archives. Upon his release from military service Orloff went to study professional photography in Paris. His photographs comprise a personal view of documentary and original photography. Orloff died in Australia in 1983.
