Or Tesema Avraham, Photographer

Or's photographs spring from her personal biography, but much of their contents is disconnected from the personal perspective, and are dealt with in a broader context. One such example is the way she interweaves femininity into her work. Tesema Avraham, daughter of a religious Ethiopian family, came to Israel as a child, and has shared he life since between two cultures and two different societies. Her attempt to assume a new and independent Israeli identity has often not been received favorably by those around her. She observes the Ethiopian community as a bystander, even though she lives amid its members. Her work seeks replies and searches for identity a search that sometimes causes confusion, loss and pain. She also feels that by dealing incessantly with tradition she may be documenting a world that is gradually disappearing.
