What
Bougainvillea leaves, cotton thread, glue
Who
Noa Liran, b. 1958
Why
“Imagine colorful bougainvillea petals plucked by the wind . . . now imagine them as butterflies . . . a necklace of butterflies.”
A necklace of butterflies composed of colorful bougainvillea petals are given a new life as a choker, entertaining a dialogue with the cycles of nature and their contingent quality. The colorful bracts surrounding its tiny flowers, which were plucked by the wind and resembled butterflies, served as the point of departure for Noa Liran’s ephemeral jewelry item, which captures a moment in time. Noa Liran underscores the beauty of different natural stages,
while freeing the object of its familiar association as a heirloom transferred from one generation to the next.
